Introducing Boomtown's new interns!
This summer, Boomtown is continuing its tradition of hiring and training the next generation of young journalists. It costs about $10,000 each summer to pay our interns at the going rate ($15-20 an hour), and to cover the time that our team members devote to mentoring. Boomtown is funded entirely by readers, and every dollar comes directly from community members who believe local journalism is worth supporting.
This year we recruited two stellar interns, Maya Price and Eliana Padilla, who started working with us at the beginning of June.
Maya Price graduated from Los Alamos High School in 2023, and will be starting her senior year at the University of Glasgow this fall. She’s majoring in English literature and creative writing, and is considering a graduate degree in journalism.
Eliana Padilla will be starting her senior year at Los Alamos High School this fall. She’s gearing up for the unenviable task of applying to colleges, with an eye toward majoring in neuroscience or psychology.
Maya and Eliana have already taken the lead on a number of stories important to Los Alamos – local governance, pedestrian safety, and human-wildlife interactions (including perhaps even a profile of the fugitive peacock in White Rock).
We hope you’ll consider making a contribution, small or large, to support their work. Whatever amount feels right to you will go directly to supporting our goals of mentoring the next generation of journalists, and building a stronger community.
