Pinon Elementary’s new school building is slated to open in time for the start of the next school year this August, and the project also includes a new access road.
Los Alamos County Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a $1 million funding allocation for Los Alamos Public Schools to construct the new northern access road near Piñon Elementary in White Rock. Once completed, the access road will run past the Piñon Park pickleball courts and connect to Sherwood Boulevard, according to Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent Jennifer Guy.
“We greatly appreciate the county’s ongoing support annually to the school district with the $1 million that we typically use to update and maintain some of our leased facilities,” Guy said.

“We believe that your support in this project benefits not only the school district but the community at large,” Guy said. “It improves safety and access to the school; it especially improves access after hours and at night.”
The construction is expected to cause minimal access issues to the public, according to Guy. Construction is underway and should be complete by August 10.
The old Piñon Elementary building is not structurally sound, Guy said, and will be demolished in phases once asbestos abatement is completed.
“As soon as we are clear, they will begin demoing those buildings one part at a time as they wrap up each section of abatement,” Guy said.
