Labor and delivery services at LAMC will cease on June 27
Los Alamos Medical Center CEO Michael Covert confirmed to Boomtown today that the center’s labor and delivery services will cease June 27.
The closure comes two months after LAMC’s April 24 press release announcing a new “regional model” for obstetric care. The hospital cites declining birth rates and staff shortages as the reasons behind the decision.
The new approach involves partnerships with Christus St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Santa Fe and Española Presbyterian Hospital. Pregnant patients at LAMC will deliver at one of those facilities or at another hospital of their choice. Those patients can continue to access gynecological, prenatal, and postnatal care at LAMC’s Women’s Health Clinic.
LAMC also plans to ensure that its ER staff has enhanced training in obstetric and neonatal emergency response. It is working with local ground and air emergency transport services to enable the transfer of pregnant, birthing, postpartum, and neonatal patients.
LAMC provided Boomtown an informational flyer (see below). Boomtown will continue reporting on this story as we learn more.
