Longtime Los Alamos resident dies while hiking
Police recovered the body of 82-year-old Damon Giovanielli on Sunday near the Anniversary Trail trailhead, according to police records obtained by Boomtown.
Giovanielli, a long-time resident of Los Alamos, was reported missing by his wife around 5:18 p.m. on July 6 after he failed to return from a solo hike. Cellphone data indicated his last position was near the Anniversary Trail trailhead, across from Main Gate Park in Los Alamos.
Police arrived in the area and located Giovanielli's body "100-150 feet below" the cliff near the Anniversary Trail trailhead, a police report stated.
Attempts by first responders from the Los Alamos Police Department and the Los Alamos Fire Department to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
LAPD said it doesn’t suspect foul play and is awaiting results of an investigation by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner to determine if Giovanielli's death was due to a medical incident or if the fall was accidental.
