Two years of Boomtown
Dear Loyal Reader,
In two years, Boomtown has grown into the most trusted source of local news and information for the citizens of Los Alamos. We’re proud of how much our work has changed lives, held community leaders to account, and raised the bar for journalism and accountability in Los Alamos.
Boomtown continues to be the only source of original, independent reporting of the stories that matter to our community. We value quality over quantity. We don’t publish recycled press releases, “cute” pictures, or rambling reader letters. Each of our stories is thoroughly researched, which takes the time and dedication of our entire team. We ask tough questions, we sit through the (often boring) public meetings, and above all, we ensure that our readers have the necessary facts they need to form their own opinions about community issues.
It costs $3,000 to $4,000 a month to publish Boomtown, and virtually all of that money goes to paying our team, including our interns. We’ve been fortunate to have had the financial support of our readers, as well as a series of grants by the NM Local News Fund and Press Forward NM. These revenue streams have served us well for the last two years, but we need to make some changes to ensure Boomtown continues to operate and grow as a sustainable and independent local business.
Starting today, we’re asking that readers sign up for a paid membership to access all of our stories. Our prices — $12/month or $120/year — will remain unchanged. It’s about the cost of one green chile cheeseburger a month, but far healthier for both you and for our community as a whole.

As an added bonus, the first $6,000 in memberships between now and Dec. 31 will be matched by the NM Local News Fund.
If, for any reason, you’re unable to afford a paid membership, send us an e-mail at membership@boomtownlosalamos.org and we’ll give you a free six-month membership, no questions asked. As always, any information you send us will remain confidential.
Memberships also can be cancelled at any time for a pro-rated refund, no questions asked.
